In today’s digital world, it can be difficult for children to develop an interest in reading. With kids’ daily exposure to videos and streamed shows, parents are hard-pressed to find ways to make them even pick up a book.  

Moms and dads recommend books that they liked as kids, only to find out it doesn’t interest their own children. It’s often because the language is different – even if it’s still English – with words rarely used now and decidedly un-modern settings . 

The good news? We live in an age where representation matters, so there’s sure to be a book for every child with characters and experiences he or she can relate to! Sometimes it takes just one book for our kids to discover the joy of reading; our goal is to introduce them to as many books as possible until they find the Right One.

Since 2009, The Learning Library has aimed to develop the love of reading in students. We’ve found that books with short chapters, age-appropriate vocabulary and lots of images get young readers engaged. Here’s a list of books we recommend for children ages 8 and up that can get them hooked on reading!
